Cancer is among the top ones in the list of chronic illnesses especially in northern India. To combat the financial burden of cancer on society government has launched various empanelment schemes. Keeping in mind the importance of awareness regarding various schemes a research was conducted with topic “A quasi experimental study to assess the effect of structured teaching programme regarding empanelment schemes among student nurses in Mohan Dai Oswal college of nursing in Ludhiana. Objectives for the study were 1. To assess the pretest knowledge regarding empanelment schemes among students nurses in Mohan Dai Oswal College of nursing. 2. To assess the post test knowledge score regarding empanelment schemes among student nurses in Mohan Dai Oswal College of nursing. 3. To compare the pretest and post test knowledge score among the student nurses of Oswal College of nursing.4. To assess the relationship between the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme with selected variables. sample size was 60.  A self structured questionnaire was developed to assess pre and post test knowledge score of student nurses. Results revealed that in pre test maximum 48(80%) of the subjects were having average knowledge while 10(16.6%) had poor knowledge followed by 2(3.3%) had good knowledge regarding empanelment schemes. No significant relationship was found with selected variables like age, year of class, type of course, parents education, type of job etc.

INTRODUCTION:

In modern era cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases in India. In a developing country like India chronic illnesses impose psychological, social as well as financial burden on family and society. To deal with such constraints in case of cancer Indian government has launched certain schemes which offer financial help to the society. These schemes are known as empanelment schemes. Empanelment is an act of assigning individual primary care provider (PCP) and care team with sensitivity to patient and family preference. But due to lack of awareness and knowledge regarding these schemes major portion of the society is deprived of their benefits.

While working in a cancer hospital and keeping in mind the importance of awareness regarding empanelment schemes researchers decided to start from health professionals and present study was conducted to assess the knowledge and effect of structured teaching on knowledge regarding various empanelment schemes available in M.D. Oswal Hospital.

PURPOSE OF STUDY:

The purpose of study is to find out the effectiveness of self structured programme regarding knowledge of empanelment scheme among the student nurses.

HYPOTHESIS H1:

Structured teaching programme will increase mean knowledge score regarding empanelment schemes among student’s nurses and difference between pre and post will be statically at 0.05 levels.

Methodology:

Research approach and Research design:

Quantitative Approach and Quasi Experimental

R   O1   x   O2

Target population:

The target population was the student nurse studying in the M.D. Oswal, college of nursing.

Sample and Sampling technique:

Total sample for the study was 60 student nurses of the Mohan Dai Oswal College of nursing Ludhiana sampling technique used was simple random sampling using lottery method.

Description of tool:

A structured questionnaire was developed to assess the knowledge of student nurses regarding empanelment scheme.

The tool has following two parts:

PART 1:- SAMPLE CHARACTERISTICS:

This part consists of item for obtaining personal information age, type of course, year of class, parent’s education, parent’s occupation.

PART 2:- STRUCTURED QUESTIONNAIRE:

This part consists of 36 self structured multiple choice questions Regarding Empanelment scheme. Each item consists of one correct answer among four choices and each correct answer carry one marks. Maximum score is 36 and minimum is 0. The questions were related to following aspects.

Schemes                                                             Items

Bharat sanchar Nigam limited                                          7(1-7)

Scoring Criteria:

Criterion measure for assessment of knowledge of student nurses regarding empanelment scheme was as follows:

Level of knowledge                                          Score

Excellent                                                            28-36

Good                                                                                 19-27

Average                                                              10-18

Below average                                                   0-9

Data collection procedure:

Data collection was done on 3rd February 2014. 60 subjects were selected through S.R sampling 10 students from each class was selected subjected were together in Mohan Dai Oswal College of Nursing Ludhiana. Researcher’s introduced self to the group and then the topic and purpose of research was explained. Verbal consent was taken from the subjects. Before starting the research teaching presentation, Pre-Test had done by using structured tool was taken from all subjects. To avoid contamination of the data investigator first checked the pretest. After that Research Teaching Presentation was introduced for 45 minutes, and then Post-Test was taken.

Ethical considerations:

·        Permission from principal of the M.D Oswal college of nursing was taken

·        Verbal consent from the subject was taken.

HYPOTHESIS H0:-

There will be not effect of structured teaching programme not effect mean knowledge score regarding empanelment schemes and the difference between pre and post will be statically non significant.

Table 4: depicts comparison between pre tests and post test knowledge scores of student Nurses Regarding Empanelment schemes. Z test was applied and found 16.8 which are significant at the 0.05 level.

Hence, null hypothesis was rejected and research hypothesis was accepted.

Major findings:

Majority of Subjects (34) were from age group of 17-19 years, equal no of subjects (30) were from both courses b.sc nursing and G.N.M and (10) from each year of class, maximum (33) were having their parents educational status up to metric and (43) were on private job.

Post test mean knowledge score (12.4) was higher than the pretest mean knowledge score (24.5) and was statistically significant at p<0.05 level.

No significant relationship was found between knowledge score and selected variables.
